<p>The impact of aging on the eyes is much greater than those tiny wrinkles and laugh lines.  As we age, our eye health and vision begin to deteriorate.  For most of us that’s no big deal, our old eyes are just tired.<br />
But, for many, almost 12% of the aging population of 45 years or greater, Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) could be the culprit.</p>
<p>I asked Dr. Mark Rosenberg, founder of the Institute for Healthy Aging, to educate us on AMD and its impact on our aging population.  Here’s what he had to say:</p>
<h2>About AMD and Your Eye Health</h2>
<p>If your vision is beginning to blur, it may indicate that AMD has begun to impact your eye health.<br />
This blurring results from damage to the macula, a small area at the back of the eye. The macula helps you see the fine detail in things that your eyes are focusing on.  However, as AMD sets-in, it makes it more difficult to do things that require sharp central vision, like reading, driving, and recognizing faces. It does not affect side vision, so it does not lead to complete blindness.</p>
<h3>Two Types of AMD</h3>
<p class="und">Dry AMD</p>
<p>The dry form of AMD is the most common type, accounting for 90% of all macular degeneration cases. It develops slowly and causes central eye vision to become dimmer or more blurry over time. It usually does not cause severe vision loss unless it turns into the wet form.</p>
<p class="und">Wet AMD</p>
<p>The wet form is much less common, but it happens more quickly and it impacts your eye health severely.  It can cause serious eye vision loss within months or even weeks. Often the first symptom of the wet form is that straight lines look wavy or curved  Most people who have the wet form have the dry form first.</p>
<h4>What Causes AMD?</h4>
<p>The dry form is a gradual process. As your old eyes age, the cells in the macula start to get thin and break down, producing waste deposits to build up in the back of the eye. Over time, this damages the macula.</p>
<p>The wet form results from abnormal blood vessels that grow in the back of the eye. These break easily and leak blood and fluid under the macula. This can quickly damage the macula and distort your central vision.</p>
<h5>Causes of AMD</h5>
<p>Experts are still studying the impact of AMD on eye health, but they know several different things may play a part. You are more likely to have macular degeneration if:</p>
<ul class="my_list">
<li>Your relatives have or had it</li>
<li>You are hypertensive</li>
<li>You have high cholesterol or consume a high amount of saturated fat</li>
<li>You are white</li>
<li>You smoke</li>
</ul>
<h6>Treatment of AMD</h6>
<p>At this time, there is no medicinal cure for macular degeneration, but experts are constantly exploring new treatment. <p>Ever go to a playground and watch the kids play? It always amazes me when I watch my daughter Ema at play, moving around with ease… in every possible position… often at top speed.</p>
<p>Remember when movement like this was easy&#8230; and even fun?</p>
<p>Without daily stretching exercises, normal movement is confined to positions maintained day after day. Any variation in normal routine becomes immediately noticeable as stiff muscles resist unfamiliar movements and joints creak and ache.</p>
<p>Suffice it to say our bodies don’t want to move the way they used to. It’s almost like being caught in Superman’s web… keeping our movement painfully restricted.</p>
<p>That’s because in a sense we are stuck in a web. It’s a super-strong yet elastic web of connective tissue in our bodies called the fascia.</p>
<p>Your fascia covers and connects everything inside you. Muscles, bones, blood vessels, and skin is all connected from the crown to the tip of your toes thanks to your fascia.</p>
<p>In good condition, fascia acts like a shock absorber and permits your body to move freely without parts of your body becoming disconnected from each other.</p>
<p>But after years of minor and major injuries, stress, poor posture, and inflammation, your fascia loses much of its elasticity. Muscles adhesions, or internal scarring, lock up your muscles and tendons in continued spasm. That’s why you feel soreness from simple stretching exercises.</p>
<p>Try this. Stand up and raise your hands straight up and stretch your arms as far as you can skyward while your feet remain planted on the floor. Do you feel resistance?</p>
<p>How about when you look as far as you can to the left, to the right, and then tilt your head back until you’re looking straight up? That tightness is from internal scar tissue binding your fascia and muscles. It might even be painful just to move your body in what should be normal easy movements.</p>
<p>To feel young, it’s so vitally important to do stretching exercises every day.</p>

<p>What is it that influences the aging process?</p>
<p>Albert Einstein showed us that chronological time can either drag by or speed by very quickly, depending on your state of mind or point of perspective.</p>
<p>Typically, the more we enjoy “the moment” the faster time flies, and unfortunately, the more painful an experience the slower time seems to move.</p>
<p>Your biological age also has variables which influences the aging process.  You either age gracefully and slowly ,or awkwardly and fast.</p>
